What time control should my child when he is playing online?

If you can find game in G10 or G15, that will be great. It's not too short to rush moves, and not too long to watch the paint dry. Playing online is a completely different experience from playing face to face. You are watching a screen, not a person. If your opponent doesn't move his piece for a few minutes, you will start wondering where he is, whether he is still connected, whether he is just wasting your time, or whether he is checking with an engine. Your mind will fly in all directions and you would not be able to focus. Your opponent might just walk out, going to bathroom, grabbing some food, chatting with someone, or maybe abandoning the game completely and leaving you waiting like a fool. It's not good experience even if he gets timed out.

Therefore, most time you should live with 5-minute blitz games. You can play 6 games in an hour, getting some feeling about chess. You can experiment some openings. You win or loss by the ability to spot tactic opportunities. If you want to get serious training, you have to go to over the board tournaments.

It's rare to find any games online longer than 15 minutes, unless you already know your opponent in person.
