Tactic Websites vs Tactic books, which one is better for beginners?

As beginners, your kids are still studying all the tactics. So it's better that s/he studys them with a systematic approach. Every time s/he learns a new tactic, such as double attack, s/he wants to practice it in dozens of positions until it becomes a nature. Most tactics books are following this methodology, teaching him/her a little about a topic, then requiring him/her practice a lot.

On websites, the problems are presented randomly, according to their difficulty levels, but not grouped by topics. So it's not easy for beginners to figure out which tactic to use.  Sometimes the problems may require several tactics.

Therefore, I prefer books to websites, for beginners to study.

Another reason I like books is more psychological. A book has finite number of problems, let's say 1000, your kids can finish several pages a day, and finish the whole book in 2 or 3 months. It's a big achievement, and positive feedback, which will give your kids great motivation to study more. Websites don't have this benefit at all, in fact, the never-ending problems will make anyone despair.

Your child needs some goals in order to achieve something. Other than rating targets, s/he should consider the following:
  • become school or club champion
  • become state champion
  • become national champion (or top 5)
  • qualify for World Youth (2015 qualification rules)
  • be invited to play in Barber, Denker, or NGIT (representing your state)
  • qualify for All-America Chess Team
  • be invited to play in Cadar (under 16), Junior Closed, and Girls Junior Closed
  • play in World Junior Championship (representing US)
