Should your state being isolated hinder your child's progress?

While I have been preaching, you should play in tournaments every week, I often hear the following feedback:
  • my state is isolated
  • I can't find any tournaments here
  • there is no chess club near my house
  • oh, that's 30 minutes from my house, do you know anything closer?
They are all excuses.

Over the weekend, a girl from isolated state Alabama, Rochelle Wu, won the gold medal in the U10 Girls section in World Cadet (the younger part of World Youth, which is split out this year).

There are not many tournaments in Alabama. Even when you find one, that often is one section, 10 people, including Rochelle and her brother. That's how bad the situation is, comparing to NY/NJ, CA, and TX. So what do they do? They drove to neighboring states, GA, NC, TN, LA, and etc. In last 52 weeks, they drove out every weekend, except one because of snow storm. They drove to GA 21 times. That's two hours one way.

That's how you solve a problem, rather than just complaining about a problem.

Kudos to Rochelle's parents, and congratulation to Rochelle again!

Playing in tournaments every weekend is not only a test for the child, but also a test for parents.

What is gambit?

According to wikipedia:

A gambit (from ancient Italian gambetto, meaning "to trip") is a chess opening in which a player, more often White, sacrifices material, usually a pawn, with the hope of achieving a resulting advantageous position.

There is a long list of gambits:

The most famous ones are King's Gambit and Queen's Gambit.

Why boys tend to progress faster than girls?

I am not participating the big gender war: boys vs girls. So the discussion here will not be complete. I just want to share one observation and hope it helps girls improve their chess games.

There is one weak point for boys. Boys tend to be careless. So they want to play, play often and play more. They want to win. They make a lot of moves that are not sound or are really bad. They have been making a lot of mistakes, much more than girls. But in the end, they learn from their mistakes, and make much faster progress.

On the contrary, girls tend to be careful and think thoroughly. They don't want to make mistakes, which is considered stupid. And they make less mistakes. But they also learn less, and progress slower. This is in fact the biggest mistake girls are making.

Learning chess is like a lot of other activities. You have to take risk. The more risk you take, the more you will learn. That's why your child should take challenges, playing up and playing against adults.

As a beginner, my daughter started with King's Gambit. I also encourage my students to pick up the opening. It trains them to be more aggressive and take a lot of risks.
